Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get my Heat Hog to light? (18K)

Make sure to hold down the control valve for 30 seconds prior to ignition to allow the gas supply to reach the pilot and purge air.

The 18,000 BTU Heat Hog comes with an electronic ignition button. Be sure 1 AAA battery is installed correctly. To check or replace the battery, unscrew the ignition button and place a fresh battery positive (+) side up.

Be sure your propane bottle or tank has fuel in it. If using a 20lbs tank, be sure the valve on the propane tank is open.

  • My Heat Hog runs for a while, then shuts off. How do I prevent this?

The heater uses air (oxygen) from the area in which the heater is used. Adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided. Due to the Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) safety feature, the heater may shut-off due to lower levels of oxygen. If this happens, provide fresh air, wait 5 minutes and re-light.

  • Can I use my Heat Hog both indoors and outdoors?

Yes, but proper ventilation is required for safe usage, as it is an unvented gas-fired heater. The heater uses air (oxygen) from the area in which the heater is used. Adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided. The Heat Hog does have a safety Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) to keep you safe but you must follow the instructions as outlined in the Heat Hog owners’ manual.

In Massachusetts and Canada, unvented heaters are prohibited from use indoors according, to law.

  • How does the dock help me use more of my fuel?

The colder an LP tank gets, the less the amount of fuel will vaporize and burn due to the temperature. Heat Hog’s Dock uses residual heat to keep your 1lb cylinder warm, so you are able to use the entirety of the fuel in the tank.

  • What maintenance should I perform on my Heat Hog?

At the start of the season, use compressed air to clean the area around the pilot light. Cover when stored to keep dust and debris from accumulating on the unit.

  • What safety features does the Heat Hog include?

A tip-over switch is a safety component that will turn the heater off if it is tipped more than a set amount of degrees. Its job is to turn the heater off if it is tipped over. The patented tilt feature of the Heat Hog operates independently from the tip switch. The Heat Hog also includes an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS). This safety component senses the amount of oxygen around the pilot. When the oxygen level drops below a specific level, the device will automatically shut off.

  • Can I convert this unit to run on a different gas other than Liquid Propane (LP)?

This heater is shipped from the factory for use with propane (LP) gas only. Do not convert to any other gas.

  • Do I need a source of fresh air when using in an ice house?

This is an unvented gas-fired heater.

  • How does the tilting feature work?

The Heat Hog features a patent pending tilting function that allows you to tilt the top portion of the heater up to 30° to direct heat to various heights.

While the heater is off and cool, apply pressure on the top of the back side of the heater (opposite of the heating plaques and guard) with one hand and one hand on the handle. Gently push down on the top of the heater until you hear the tilt mechanism click. Keep tilting until desired angle is reached or you reach the limit of the tilting function. CAUTION: If heater has been previously operating, the wire guard will remain hot. Allow guard to cool before handling.

  • What is the ODS?

ODS stands for Oxygen Depletion Sensor. This safety component senses the amount of oxygen around the pilot. When the oxygen level drops below a specific level, the device will automatically shut off.

  • What does the Safety Tip-over Switch do?

The tip-over switch is a safety component will turn the heater off if it is tipped more than a set amount of degrees. Its job is to turn the heater off if it is tipped over. The patented tilt feature of the Heat Hog operates independently from the tip switch.

  • The main burner goes out periodically, what can I do?

First thing is to check the LP cylinder. As the LP is depleted, the pressure will drop. A nearly empty cylinder would have low pressure. Also check to make sure the Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) is not sensing a low oxygen level. Be sure to provide a minimum fresh air opening of 9in2, especially if in smaller confined spaces such as an ice fishing house.

  • Is the Heat Hog safe for indoor use in Massachusetts?

Unvented heaters are prohibited from use indoors according, to Massachusetts law.

  • Is the Heat Hog safe for indoor use in Canada?

Unvented heaters are prohibited from use indoors, according to Canadian law.

  • Can I use a 20lbs tank with my Heat Hog instead of the standard 1lb cylinder?

Yes, Heat Hog 18,000 BTU and 9,000 BTU are certified for use up to a 20lb cylinder. Larger tanks are not considered portable.

Use a hose such as the 20LB TO 1LB HOSE ADAPTER for the 9,000 BTU unit or the 20LB QUICK CONNECT HOSE WITH REGULATOR for the 18,000 BTU unit.

  • The pilot flame will not light or stay lit. (18K Heat Hog only)
